Oh oh, I remember a several years old article in The Economist about how Russia and Canada are competing for mastery over the poles and how Obama needs an Arctic policy. I thought the whole article was in jest, but it seems that they may really be a program to find something in the poles and corner it for world domination, and only the cold countries have the native experience in navigating them.
ReplyDeleteIt was strange enough that Russians had ice-breaking ships to make the poles more navigable. WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO FIND THERE?
The Arctic has real geostrategic and energy value. My wife wrote a report on that for the DOD at her old job. I think the Antarctic is purely for research at this point.
