Anyone know where I can get French and British census microdata from the mid-19th century?
Extremely not a short-term thing.
It just didn't seem to be available at the British census website or IPUMS, which has the historical U.S. censuses but only recent international censuses.
Just some simple googling let's you search those censuses for genealogical purposes, but that's not really what I'm thinking of obviously. I may find it, but in case anyone knew off the top of their head. My first instinct was IPUMS but that wasn't helpful. I'm a little sketchy on what French censuses there are. They seemed to occur but I'm not sure with what regularity. The British seem to have them every decade from 1841 on.
www.nappdata.org has 1851 and 1881 British census microdata. Please cite appropriately :) Other nineteenth century British censuses will become available in the next few years.
Mid-nineteenth century French census microdata is not AFAIK in publicly available form. Joe Ferrie has done some work with samples, so you might approach him. Other people have developed samples for particular regions.
If they were publicly available we'd have them at NAPP.
Feel free to email me privately about this (email link at website)
if you find the answer to this, could you please re-post?
ReplyDeleteSure.
