A thought on tonight's job speech

I don't think I'll be watching it... you only need a set of bullet points out of these things, really. But I thought this was worth sharing to capture the mood:

"Obviously it is much more difficult to solve the problem to-day than it would have been a year ago. But I believe even now, as I believed then, that we could still be, if we would, the masters of our fate." - John Maynard Keynes, 1932

  1. It isn't very important for a couple of obvious reasons. The media environment is just a lot richer than it used to be; people are also just a lot more skeptical of claims made by politicos.

Keynes' quote is nice and all but avoids the difficulties associated with decision-making in the first place. Lots of people have different ideas as to the question of "What Is To Be Done?"* Unless you're going to take some Thomistic perspective on sovereignty you have to convince people that you're right; and outside the confines of some number of economists and the ~20% of Americans who think of themselves as "progressives" that hasn't been done.

*I hope someone gets the humor in that query.
