I'm an economics doctoral candidate at American University, and I'll start there at the end of August. I'll be the very grateful recipient of a merit-based assistantship that I'll be able to keep for four years. I'm planning on doing the macroeconomics track, with field work in labor economics and monetary economics. Right now I'm interested in doing dissertation work on gross worker flows and the wage adjustment process, but of course that's a little while off at this point.
Congratulations and good luck!
ReplyDeleteWelcome and congrats!
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be great.
ReplyDelete10 to 20 years from now, I imagine Daniel Kuehn will be a distinguished writer on political economy, tracing proto-Keynesian thinking in early American statesmen and classical liberals. It will force a shakedown that will cut down all kinds of grassroots movements (progressive or miniarchist), for they will no longer be able to appeal to authority of ancien thinkers. Everyone shall know they are being selective.
I have a million budding research ideas in my head, and as you know that is one of them. That's one that I actually think could make an impression on how people think about things. "Why did Keynesianism catch on so quickly in the UK" is an easy question to answer. Keynes is a reformed Marshall, after all and he had a crew of proselytizers on top of that. "Why did Keynesianism catch on so quickly in the US" is a much, much tougher question that people like Ohanian have dismissed far too easily. And I think I have a good answer for it.
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, I don't want to be pegged as a historian of thought (fun as that may be), so I think I'm going to tackle some "real work" first that's more marketable. Such is life.
Awesome. Congrats man!
ReplyDeleteAlthough, does this mean that the blog will take a back seat?
(FWIW, had a PhD interview myself this w/end so we'll see what happens...)
Good! I'm glad you're pursuing it. Which one?
ReplyDeleteYes - I think the blog will take a back seat but perhaps not gone completely. I'm setting up a website - I'll update the blog occassionally but use the website to post works in progress at a somewhat slower pace. That's the plan at least - I may be irresponsible and keep blogging.
Back in Norway, but we'll see!
ReplyDelete(Without wanting to sound cocky, I think my chances of getting in are pretty good based on the feedback that I have received thus far. They also have very generous research stipends in that part of the world, which certainly adds to the attraction. However, I need to think seriously about my broader motivations for doing a PhD, career path, etc... I also need to consider the option of applying to universities in other countries/regions for 2012. Still, that's all for the next few weeks to think about!)
That's the plan at least - I may be irresponsible and keep blogging.
That's the spirit!
Congratulations. I hope your understanding of economics continues to grow.
