Those two questions that he asks in all videos about the initiation of force:

1. Don't really address the issue in a complete way, and
2. Do, if they are accepted uncritically, offer a very simple proof for libertarianism.

His whole method is to catch politicians in inconsistencies. I am indeed saying that those inconsistencies are in most cases probably less substantive than he thinks.Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17192667997950934790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740670447258719504.post-53508116699973461812011-02-04T08:25:03.796-05:002011-02-04T08:25:03.796-05:00Daniel,

But I think you were accusing Jan of making arguments that 'score points' rather than illuminate truth - whether he knew he was doing it or not (so not necessarily disingenuous).

Before reading your post I had seen Jan's youtube videos of interviews he conducted with Nancy Pelosi, Pete Stark, George Will, and a Virginia state senator (I think - I don't recall her name). I honestly did not see him doing what you say he was doing (whether intended or not).

This is why I asked if you had a specific interview in mind. I wanted to see if I agreed with your assessment based on a certain video, or not.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740670447258719504.post-62064352243047055752011-02-04T06:43:24.406-05:002011-02-04T06:43:24.406-05:00Sorry for the confusion, Anonymous - I don't h...Sorry for the confusion, Anonymous - I don't have any reason to believe Jan is being disingenuous. I'm not claiming that.

That was an interesting and unique video - less talking and more action in that one :)dkuehnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10136690886858186981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740670447258719504.post-14142475957002092052011-02-04T06:33:41.860-05:002011-02-04T06:33:41.860-05:00Daniel,

If it is, it is not clear to me how Jan is being disingenuous (i.e. setting up a 'trap')...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObebwaznpLEAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740670447258719504.post-76727929604488066862011-02-04T01:16:15.938-05:002011-02-04T01:16:15.938-05:00That questioning technique of debate -
I was seei...That questioning technique of debate -

I was seeing an interview by Phil Donahue with Friedman. Donahue never needed to make an argument, but ask the right questions. With the right questions, he could corner Friedman right where he wanted him. When Friedman said that pollution can be controlled by a tax on emmissions by cars, Donahue just asked, "How do you put a monetary value to something that comes out of the car's exhaust?" That got a nervous laughter from Friedman.

Used rightly, an interviewing technique can work, it seems. Of course, I just checked some of Helfeld's interviews, and his interviewee had to remind him, "No. Come back. Please come back to what we were saying."Prateek Sanjaynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740670447258719504.post-75122012460982489652011-02-03T22:21:56.897-05:002011-02-03T22:21:56.897-05:00Most that can come up with a "Jan Helfeld&quo...Most that can come up with a "Jan Helfeld" search on Youtube.
