James Joyner of Outside the Beltway provides a nice discussion here.
I also just found out that Susan Fleck will be my professor for Gender Economics this fall. She is a guest professor, so of course the first thing I did was familiarize myself with some work she's done. And lo and behold, she also has some recent work in the Monthly Labor Review on the divergence of productivity and compensation. I have not had the chance to read it yet.
Noah Smith's comment section has also grown and has a lot of discussion worth reviewing if you're intereste in this..

Does the data James Joyner mention use total income and then split it down into an hourly total?
ReplyDeleteIn the BLS statistics there are many omissions from the raw average hourly wage rate. Once those are added back in again that answers change.
The main BLS series that was used to supposedly show that "median incomes have stagnated since the 70s" has been discontinued because it's conditions and omissions are so complicated, making it difficult to use correctly.
Out of curiosity Daniel Kuehn, what is your opinion of the Union of Radical Political Economics? It seems that your Gender Economics lecturer has some involvement with that heterodox economics group. I have nothing against Marxists, but I'm wondering what are your opinions of them. (There are a couple of Neo-Marxists involved at the economics department of the small liberal arts college I attend.)
